From building sites to building lives, Dean delivers a huge impact

If you have spent any time around our team, chances are you’ve felt the warmth, humour, and easy going energy that Dean brings to every room he walks into. A true Redcliffe local, a passionate footy fan, and an unshakeable optimist, Dean operates on a simple philosophy: "If you can’t have fun at work, what’s the point?"

This September marks a huge milestone for Dean who is celebrating 5 years with Holistic Horizons. But behind his quick wit and warm smile lies a powerful story of purpose, family, and a life-changing career leap.

Trading the pressure for genuine purpose

For over 25 years, Dean worked as a construction sales representative in the timber and hardware industry. It was a career filled with long road trips, tight deadlines, and constant commercial targets.

"Making money for someone else, you're under the pump all the time," Dean recalls. While he built a solid work ethic in the building industry, he knew in his heart there was more to life than chasing sales figures. He wanted to make a tangible, personal difference.

The turning point came completely unexpectedly. Following shoulder reconstruction surgery, Dean was undergoing hydrotherapy when he noticed support workers assisting participants in the pool. Observing their care and connection, something clicked. A few people suggested he give it a go himself.

He reached out to Holistic Horizons, came in for an interview, and started the very next day and he hasn't looked back.

A lived experience and a father’s heart

What made Dean’s transition into disability support so natural wasn't just a career change, it was the life he had already been living for two decades.

As the proud dad of a 20-year-old daughter with an intellectual disability, Dean understands the journey on a level that no textbook can teach. He has walked the path as a parent, navigating daily challenges, advocating for support, and cheering from the sidelines as his daughter competed in the Special Olympics, winning two gold medals and a bronze at the national level, with another state campaign in Melbourne later this year.

Watching her determination, celebrating her wins, and being immersed in the disability community gave Dean an incredible foundation of empathy, patience, and deep personal understanding.

"I already had the life experience," Dean says. "Most things that get thrown at me, I stay pretty calm. It doesn't matter how much experience you have, every day is different. But if a participant finishes their day with a smile on their face, then I'm happy. That's what it's all about."

Dean’s drive to lift others up extends far beyond his shifts at Holistic Horizons. He has been involved in Redcliffe football community for 25 years, organising community BBQs, running awards nights, and raising funds to support junior footy players as they grow both on and off the field.

Whether he is supporting a participant to smash a five-year personal goal or mentoring young athletes in Redcliffe, Dean’s core passion remains the same: helping people realise their full potential.

Reflecting on his five-year milestone with Holistic Horizons, Dean knows he has found his true calling.

"This job is more rewarding," says Dean. "It's a great family business where everyone genuinely cares, and I don't see myself doing anything else."
