When you first meet Shaun, you're struck by his drive.
At 36, he is a man of incredible milestones. As a dedicated Special Olympics athlete, Shaun has represented Queensland and Australia for 13
years, achieving 190 medals across sports including Football, Cricket, AFL, and Athletics. From Athens to Brazil, his sporting journey has
taken him across the globe, but his greatest achievements are the ones he is winning right here at home as a proud father to Xavier (13)
and Skye (5).
The journey to independence
Shaun’s path hasn't always been easy. In the past, he lived with a host family where he was largely left to support himself. The transition
to a supported living environment with Holistic Horizons, has been the true turning point in his life.
"I have grabbed this opportunity by both hands," Shaun says. "Moving here has been big for me. I’ve learned patience, how to 'read the room,' and how to be a better housemate to my friend, Chris." By focusing on budgeting, domestic skills, and positive behavioural strategies, Shaun has gained the stability he needed to thrive and to be a better dad. He now credits collaborative domestic chores, which he shares with his housemates as a key part of the harmony in his SIL home.
A mentor and a voice
Shaun’s passion for helping others has been a reflection of his own life experiences. Drawing on his previous experience as a relief teacher aide and groundsman at Aspley Special School, Shaun now mentors with Parent-to-Parent. He helps families navigate the complex NDIS landscape and visits special schools to educate students on life after graduation, showcasing pathways for open employment that many didn't realise were possible. He is currently applying to be on the Australian committee disability board.
He is a powerful advocate for those who cannot always stand up for themselves, and his ultimate professional goal is to become a support worker, giving back to the community that has supported him
Living life to the fullest
Shaun’s day-to-day life is a testament to his ambition. Between working from home,
going to the gym, running, mentoring, he is also busy learning to drive. After buying his first car last year, he is determined to have his
license by the end of 2026. He has also mastered the art of saving, turning past struggles with budgeting into rewarding growth as he puts
money aside for his first-ever holiday to the Gold Coast.
When asked what he looks forward to everyday Shaun’s answer was simple “getting up everyday and living life, you are only live once. Just be
yourself and be happy. If you be yourself and you’re happy generally people like you. Don’t pretend to be someone you are not, that’s when
stuff happens”.
Shaun, thank you for being such a vital part of our community. We are honoured to be part of your journey, and we can’t wait to see you
achieve your life goals.
